(Note: During the Lenten Season City Church will be blogging about Lent and our journey to Holy Week [April 9th – April 16]. I will be linking to the blog posts here on my blog page but you can find each blog post on our City Church website. Our hope is that each of these blog/articles will be an encouragement to you as you journey through the Lenten season as well.) Today’s blog post is written by Rev. Jack Carter, Pastor Emeritus and Theologian-in-Residence at City Church.
Lent Day 20: Psalm 120 and Sojourners
Psalm 120:1 begins with “In my distress I cry to the Lord, that he may answer me; deliver me, O Lord”. Another translation has it, “To the Lord in my affliction I cried out, and He heard me.” Psalm 120 is the first of fifteen consecutive Psalms known as the “songs of ascent.” These “songs” are also called “odes”, or “graduals”. It is as if the people of God ascend in degrees to worship the living God as they walked form sometimes considerable distance up to Jerusalem for the feasts of Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. Thus the church has often used these Psalms as we progress through Lent to Easter.
