If I were to list all the people who played a role in the shaping of who I am as a Christian, amongst the top ten would be John Bonacorsi. Pastor Bonacorsi is the retiring pastor of Christian Life Church in Rantoul, Illinois. After 30+ years in pastoral ministry he is stepping down from the senior role at CLC. I was privileged to have sat under Pastor Bonacorsi’s teaching during the most formative years in my life. From about the age of 8 to 18, my family attended his church and I was an active participant in the youth program. All during those years I had maybe a handful of personal conversations with Pastor John but the community in general, that he helped shape, certainly had a lasting impact on my own life. For that I am truly grateful.
I had the opportunity to go back to CLC two years ago and sit under his teaching and participate in their worship service on a particular Sunday morning. I found a lot of familiar faces intermixed with quite a few new ones. There were a few minor differences from when I attended as a kid: new facility, updated technology, increased ministries. But there were also some characteristics that were exactly as I remembered them: warm friendly environment, enthusiastic worship and healthy participation from the congregants. I can’t say that my time at CLC is what led me to be in pastoral ministry nor can I say that I would be attending if I lived back home today. But I can say that without the ministry of John Bonacorsi and the CLC community helping shape my life during those years I would not be the same man I am today.
