Jonathan Edwards, the great preacher from the 1700’s, gave a sermon entitled Christ’s Agony. He references the Gospel of Luke and that in the Garden of Gethsemane Christ was sweating blood. Edwards pointed out that Jesus was sweating blood because he about to be sent into God’s furnace of justice and the door was open and he was feeling the heat. Think about that.
Christ came to earth in order that he may go into the ultimate furnace of God’s justice and He did it for you. He took on all the punishment of what God had for us and he went willingly. He went in.
The God of the Bible does not rescue by reaching down and pulling us out. No. He is not immune to our suffering. Rather he goes into the ultimate furnace for us. No other religion comes even close to talking about a god who understands our suffering. No other religion. What else would you turn to? How can you not turn to Christ? He’s the only God who understands our suffering.
