What we say, the words that come out of our mouth—they matter! Words count. They matter so much that out of the ‘top 10’ commandments that God gives to us, our words make the list: Thou Shall Not Bear False Witness.
In Matthew chapter 12 Jesus carries that commandment forward: 36But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” Words count. Words have consequences. Words will be judged strictly. In Proverbs18:21: life and death are in the power of the tongue.

We are not to say, “Don’t lie, because Christianity teaches don’t lie.” We say, “When we lie, when we speak falsehood, gossip, slander, we are trampling on something that God has put into us. We trample on a greatness and a dignity that is given by God our Creator. Every word counts. Are you beginning to see the danger and seriousness of the 9th Commandment?
