Sigmund Freud theorized that man’s need to overcome his helplessness leads him to the idea of a Higher Power, which man identifies as God. In an article entitled Freud and Lewis: Signs of the Supernatural, Freud is quoted as saying that “…religious ideas have arisen from the same need as have all other achievements of civilization: from the necessity of defending oneself against the crushingly superior force of nature.”
Well if Freud is correct than Christianity has failed! Because according to Matthew 8, we’ve apparently ‘invented’ a God that is more terrifying than the crushingly superior force of nature!
From the Gospel of Matthew chapter 8: Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27 The men were terrified and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
This is a somewhat humorous situation and most know the story. Jesus and the disciples were in a boat when a great and violent storm rose up and we are told in the text that Jesus had fallen asleep in the stern of the boat. But the disciples were very afraid of this violent storm and rightfully so. Anyone who has ever been caught out on the sea when a storm comes up knows it can be a frightening event.
So the disciples woke Jesus up (a smart move!) and we are told in verse 26: He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. Imagine what was taking place. The disciples were first terrified by the storm until Jesus calms the storm and then the disciples are terrified of Jesus! The storm (this crushing superior force of nature according to Freud) wasn’t anywhere near as terrifying as The One who calmed the storm!
When the disciples saw this man calm the storm on the sea, they were absolutely terrified. But when they saw this same man die on the cross and calm the ultimate storm of God’s justice, they, like the storm, were stilled and at peace. Christianity = 1 / Freud = 0.
